Une histoire du violoncelle | De cellogeschiedenis in beeld | An Illustrated History of the Cello

FR | Jan Strick – luthier – expose à Flagey huit violoncelles de provenances et d’époques diverses depuis le XVIIe siècle, témoins précieux qui nous permettent d’aborder de manière visuelle et auditive l’évolution souvent méconnue de cet instrument. Sur base de son expérience de musicien et de riches sources iconographiques, Hervé Douchy s’interroge sur l’origine commune du violoncelle et de la basse de violon. Enfin, Peter François évoque neuf générations de violoncellistes belges et met en lumière l’importance de l’histoire belge du violoncelle.
NL | De vioolbouwer Jan Strick stelt de geschiedenis van de cello vanaf de 17e eeuw voor vaan de hand van acht instrumenten van diverse oorsprong. Ze illustreren de nog te weinig bekende evolutie van het instrument. Hervé Douchy gaat op zoek naar de gemeenschappelijke wortels van de cello en de basviool, op basis van veel beeldmateriaal en zijn ervaring als muzikant. Peter François laat negen generaties belgische cellisten de revue passeren en schetst het belang van de Belgische celloschool.
EN | Jan Strick, violin maker, has brought together in Flagey eight instruments from various periods to illustrate a history of the cello since the 17th century. This valuable evidence will allow us to visually and audibly address the often little-known evolution of the instrument. Based on his experience as a musician and on rich iconographic sources, Hervé Douchy will discuss the common origins of the violoncello and the bass violin. Peter Servais presents nine generations of Belgian cellists and brings to light the story of Belgian school of cello playing.
